Ultima Online shield builder: Defense Chance, resists and Spell Channeling

For official shards · every figure from uo.com · free, no account needed

A shield is judged on what a shield is for: keeping hits off you. That means Defense Chance Increase, the resists it carries, and whether it lets you keep casting.

The shield builder judges the off hand on exactly those, next to the rest of your suit.

Defense Chance Increase, and how a hit is decided

An attacker’s chance to hit you is

((their skill + 20) × (100 + their HCI)) ÷ ((your skill + 20) × (100 + your DCI) × 2)

and it never drops below 2%. Hit Chance Increase and Defense Chance Increase both cap at 45%. Armour refinements move the DCI cap: a deflecting refinement raises it by one and lowers your maximum resist by one, and a reinforced one does the reverse.

Spell Channeling

A shield without Spell Channeling stops you casting while it is in your hand. If the character casts, the builder shows whether the shield has it, so a mage hybrid does not plan around a shield it cannot use.

Parrying

With a shield, Parrying gives you a chance to block a hit outright. Your chance to block is cut when your Dexterity is under 80; at 80 or more there is no penalty. The parry calculator works out your block chance and the swings that still land. More on the skill: Parrying.

How to use it

  1. Open the shield builder and tap to choose a shield.
  2. Check its Defense Chance Increase, resists and Spell Channeling.
  3. Leave it empty for a two-hander, or to keep a hand free for a spellbook.

Where these numbers come from

Every cap and figure on this page is from uo.com’s official wiki, and the builder uses the same ones. Anything uo.com does not publish carries a [!] in the tool, on the screen where it appears.

All of it describes official shards. Free shards run different numbers and a figure from one of them would be wrong here.
